Course Name: FAM 328 – Seamanship and Navigation

FAM 328 will cover topics in parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude, measurement of distances: depth and speed at sea. It will also discuss the electronic aids to navigation, then boat classification, types and uses. It will further cover boat motors and hull types, lauching and retrieving boat and the general hazards on sea navigation.
Course Guidelines and materials, Open/Close times
This online course is built on a bi-weekly framework of material. Notes and class recordings will typically be posted during the week. Assignments may be completed and submitted at any time during the week they are due.
Posted course materials, including slide for the lectures, and recordings of the synchronous lectures, will remain open throughout the month. In this fashion, students who are unable to attend the lectures for technical or personal reasons, such as unexpected difficulties with information technology, personal or family illness, or the need to become a family caretaker, will have access to all the same class materials as students who attend the lectures.
Week 1: Monday, 19/04 (8 – 9pm): General introduction, Parallel of latitude and meridians of longitude
Week 2: Wednesday, 28/04 (9pm – 10pm): Measurement of distances and speed at sea
Week 3: Monday, 10/05 (8pm – 9pm): Electronic aids to navigation, Boat classification
Week 4: Thursday, 13/05 (9pm – 10pm): Boat types and uses, motor and hull types
Week 5: Saturday, 22/5 (8pm – 10pm): Revision
Hostclass: We will use Hostclass (https://learn.hostclass.net) as a remote classroom response system. You must register and pay an access fee to make use of the Hostclass Virtual Classroom.
Assignments and Examination:
There will be one assignment, one virtual quiz and an exam at the end of the course. Notice shall be given for quiz and exam. Assignments would be submitted electronically and within the stipulated time. Extension will not be accepted except on some special consideration duly given by Mr. Aloysius.

The course will be graded on the scale:
• virtual classroom attendance = 5%
• quiz = 15%
• assignment and participation =10%
• shall be based on examination = 70%
